How to Check a UK Vehicle's History Before Buying

Why Vehicle History Matters

Buying a vehicle for export is a significant investment. Whether you’re spending $15,000 or $60,000, you need confidence that the vehicle is exactly what it claims to be. Here’s how to verify a UK vehicle’s history.

1. Check the MOT History (Free)

The UK government provides free MOT history checks at gov.uk. Enter the vehicle’s registration number to see:

  • Every MOT test date and result (pass/fail)
  • Recorded mileage at each test
  • Advisory notes and failure reasons
  • Test expiry dates

This is the single most valuable free check you can do. Consistent mileage readings across MOT tests confirm the odometer hasn’t been tampered with.

2. HPI Check / Vehicle History Report

For a more thorough investigation, run an HPI or similar check. These paid services reveal:

  • Outstanding finance — Is there money still owed on the vehicle?
  • Insurance write-off status — Has the vehicle been declared a total loss?
  • Stolen vehicle check — Is it on the Police National Computer?
  • Number plate changes — Has the registration been swapped?
  • Import/export status — Was it previously imported?

We run HPI checks on every vehicle in our inventory as standard.

3. Service History

A full service history from authorised dealers is the gold standard. It confirms:

  • Regular maintenance was performed
  • Genuine parts were used
  • Any recalls were addressed
  • The vehicle was cared for by professionals

Vehicles with full service history command higher prices but offer significantly better reliability.

4. V5C Registration Document

The V5C (logbook) contains essential information:

  • Registered keeper details
  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
  • Engine number
  • Date of first registration
  • Colour and body type

Always verify that the VIN on the V5C matches the VIN stamped on the vehicle itself.

5. Physical Inspection

Nothing replaces a thorough physical inspection. Check for:

  • Paint inconsistencies (indicating previous repairs)
  • Panel gaps (signs of accident damage)
  • Tyre condition and matching brands
  • Interior wear consistent with stated mileage
  • Engine bay cleanliness and fluid levels
